A companion psalm
the weaned child
LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty:
neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother:
my soul is even as a weaned child.
Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.
Three verses. The shortest psalm that could possibly be assigned to the arc, and the most precise. The weaned child has stopped grasping for what it wanted. It is no longer crying for the breast. It has settled into the mother's arms - not because it got what it was demanding, but because it stopped demanding. It is simply present. Calm. Quiet. That IS the identity past heroism. The andiron that does not grit, does not endure, does not count the hours. It simply rests where it was placed. Psalm 131 says in three verses what 3.2 says in 850 words.
